The internet creates an explosive
opportunity for people to create
their small businesses. I always
encourage young adults and people
with some years of working life
and maturity to use the internet
specifically to create a business
or hobby.
Focus on marketing this
small business via the
multi-media. Nobody has
sufficient money to start a
business (unless they have rich
parents as in many cases of young
vets in Singapore opening their
practice).
For example, if I want to start a
hot-dog business, I will pay for
a domain name and host a real
professional website (not those
free ones like
blogger.com which does not
give confidence to the consumer).
I will update daily and there are
many examples nowadays of
successful small business websites
unlike the time I started my own
real estate website
www.asiahomes.com sometime in
1997.
At that time, the webpage was in
grey and black not like the
multi-coloured ones nowadays.
I paid a webmaster to do the basic
skeleton and the website is still
existing in 2010. Some 5 years
ago, an American expat contacted
me via the website. He bought a
Wing On Life condo through me for
$3.3 million. My co-broking agency
commission was $16,500. This
amount pays for many years
of website hosting at $500/year.
Do let me know if you need help in
setting up a professional website
to sell hot dogs. A journey starts
with the first step. If you wait
till you have sufficient money as
an employee to rent a retail shop,
you will not make your dreams come
true. |
